Maria Limberis has a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from Liverpool John Moores University, and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Adelaide. Maria joined the GTP as a post-doctoral researcher in 2003 working on cystic fibrosis. Maria is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Penn. Her research is focused on engineering AAV-based prophylaxis for airborne infectious diseases that include influenza, and developing AAV vectors for treatment of airway and retinal genetic diseases.

Maria is Faculty Advisor to the Program for Comparative Medicine and in this role oversees all animal use programs at GTP. Maria is President of the Hellenic Medical Society of Philadelphia, co-chair of the New Investigator Committee, and chair of the Respiratory and GI Tract Committee of the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy. Maria has more than 40 scientific publications, a book chapter, and is co-inventor on five patent applications.
